Music Video Research

Me and my group have been looking at different girls band and looking at there music video's to give us an idea of what competition we have and what conventions they use. We have also found out that the target audience of girl bands are usually females ages 13 - 24, therefore we know that the artists should be fairly young.

The Pussycat Dolls - Stickwitu ft. Avant

Here is the music video 'Stickwitu' by the Pussycat Dolls which would be in the genre of pop, in this music they have a performance element, which is when they are dancing and singing on stage, whilst having a story being told throughout it. They uses slow motions and i think this goes perfectly with the tempo of the song. There is also a lot of mid shots at low and flat angles of the artists whilst they are singing, which connotes that the artist is trying to connect with the audience. Then when we looked at the video statistics i can see that most of the viewers are female aged 13 to 34, this shows that they target a young female audience. Their costumes in this video are very casual and also show each persons individuality.

Destiny's Child - Cater 2 U

This is the 'Cater 2 u' by Destiny's Child music video. In this video all the girls are represented in a similar way, for example when they are all dancing in a line they are all wearing the same costume making it have a military look, and there costumes are also very glamourous and sexy. This is another music video that has a female audience age 13 to 34. With this music video it doesn't have a story being told during the music video, but it seem to just sexualize the artists by dressing them in revealing outfits and having them more or less preforming to men. The similarity that this music video has to the Pussycat Doll's music video is that they both have a dance scene.

Girls Aloud - The Loving Kind

Here is 'The Loving Kind' by Girls Aloud, in this music video each girl is represented with their own identity and are never show performing all together as a group. Then like the Destiny's Child music video it doesn't have a main story to it and just aims on showing the girls in their own environment not communicating with the rest of the group. This girl band also has a pop genre, but they only have a female audience aged 13 to 17 and a male audience of 35 to 54. But unlike Pussycat Doll's and Destiny's Child they do not have a dance scene.

RD - Do It Like Me

This is 'Do It Like Me' by RD, which is a very different girl band compared to the other 3 we have looked at. This girl band has a R&B genre and dress very street, wearing a lot of black and leather. Yet like the Pussycat Dolls and Destiny's Child they do have a dance scene, which can be easily copied. This music video has a female audience aged 13 to 24 which isn't as big age range compared to Pussycat Dolls and Destiny's Child. This also doesn't have a little story being shown though out the video and it just aims on showing the artist.

Sugababes - About a Girl

Here is 'About a Girl' by Sugababes, like RD this music video also has a female audience aged 13 to 24 and like Pussycat Dolls, Destiny's Child and Girls Aloud this music video has a pop genre. This music video does have a dance scene and has a story being shown while the artists are preforming, but unlike the Pussycat Dolls music video the artists do not appear in the story which is being shown throughout the music video. This music video is also based on a film called "Charlie's Angel's", which is about woman who fight crime and show that they are stronger than men.

Choosing a song and asking for permission

Over the holidays i had chosen a song that i thought would be good to make a music video to. This song was 'Here i am by Girlicious', Girlicious is an american girl band who are not that known in the UK and also do not have a music video to this song. When we come back to school we got put in our groups, the people that are in my group are David, Sean and Sallyanne, and out of the songs we all chose we thought that the song i picked would be a good song to work with and make a music video to.
Here is a screen grab of me asking for permission to uses the song to create a music video to:
